Have you noticed strawberries are starting to make an appearance in grocery stores yet? I have, that is for sure! Question is, do you know what to look for when picking which ones to buy?
Selecting The Best Strawberry
- Size Doesn’t Matter – Say what?!? The old saying, ‘Bigger the berry, sweeter the juice,’ isn’t exactly true.
- Bright Red – Sweetness actually depends on the color.
- No White – Look for berries with no white at the top. This goes back to the bright red color. So, look for ones completely bright red and no white.
- Green Caps – While the leafy green caps aren’t fun to remove, they do help you pick the best berries. Look for berries with fully attached green caps.
- Firm – If you are able, gently squeeze a few of the berries. Firm berries will last longer in the fridge.
- Keep the container – Ever wonder why the containers look a bit odd? They were actually designed to help keep the berries from rotting so quickly. The ventilation design helps reduce moisture, which promotes rot.
- Rinse – Before eating, always make sure to rinse the berries.
- Room Temp – After rinsing, let the berries sit out on the counter and reach room temp. Why might you ask? Well, this helps maximize the flavor.
